Description: The sunstone has a translucent orange-red or opaque reddish-brown color, but may also be orange, brown or red with glittering hematite and goethite lamellae which are almost always opaque and has a metallized and iridescent appearance due to the inclusions of ‘hematite. The biggest mines of sunstone are located in Canada, India, Russia and Norway, but it can also be found in the United States.

Characteristics: Sunstone is an oligioclase feldspar with a triclinic crystal system. Its hardness is between 6 and 6.5 onto the Moh’s scale and it has a density of 2.64. Having a good hardness, this stone will remain clean and intact for quite a long time. When viewed from certain directions, it exhibits a spangled appearance. The optical effect appears to be due to reflections from inclusions of red copper, and is called shiller. The middle part of the crystal sparkles, and usually the color is darkest in the middle and becomes lighter toward the outer edges.

History: The stone of the sun symbolizes the source of light, warmth and life. It is a hot stone with revitalizing and fulfilling energy. The sparkling spikes of the sunstone once earned it the name “Starstone”. The legend says that if it was soaked in vinegar, it could move by itself. Among the Buddhists, the sunstone represents the Golden Man (the stone of Vishnu); Among the Celts, cosmic light; In China, the Imperial Sun, and for the Hebrews it is the stone of the High Priest. Also, it is said that Vikings used sunstones to find their way into the ocean, using their light reflection properties.

Etymology: The name sunstone is actually a translation of how it was called first : sólarsteinn. It comes from the Old Norse, which is a Viking langage.

Power: The sunstone is a very positive stone that radiates and is effective against gloom and sadness. It gives vitality, visual clarity, faith and help to meditation. It  also brings the joy of life and strengthens self-confidence. It allows us to affirm ourselves positively.

Sunstone provides a source of strength if you are dependent on others emotionally, or have suffered the sudden loss of a partner. It helps alleviate fearfulness and stress, and protects against those who drain your energies or finances. It is also an excellent crystal for phobia sufferers to ease fear of the dark, enclosed places, or the presence of other triggers.
